Golf Towels: I Didn’t Know It Was A Thing

OK- So, when I first thought about this… I didn’t really think about golf towels much. As a matter of fact, I don’t think that I ever gave too much thought to a golf towel for my bag. Frankly, I have been GIVEN so many over the years that I just don’t think about BUYING one… or what the specifications SHOULD be.

But, after a little thought. And considering that we are Golf LEARNGING Lab- we kind of have a “teaching” mentality and we should think about these things- especially for the novice that might not know.

As a golfer- AND now that I have looked at the subject, I can tell you that one of the most underrated pieces of equipment in (or on as the case may be) your golf bag is the humble golf towel. YOU might not think much about it either, but this small accessory can make a huge difference in your game. Whether it’s for cleaning your clubs, keeping your hands dry, or wiping off sweat, a good golf towel is an essential part of any golfer’s kit.

Why Golf Towels Are Essential

  • Keeping Your Clubs Clean– Have you ever tried to hit a perfect shot only to have it go awry because your clubface was dirty? It’s frustrating! A clean clubface is crucial for good contact with the ball. Golf towels help you keep your clubs spotless by removing dirt, grass, and sand that can affect your shot. Simply wiping down your clubs after every shot or hole can keep them in top condition and improve your consistency on the course.
  • Improving Your Grip– A good grip on your club is essential for control and accuracy. If your hands are sweaty or if it’s a particularly humid day, a golf towel can come to your rescue. By drying your hands and grips regularly, you can maintain a firm hold on your clubs, which helps in executing those perfect swings. Plus, a dry grip reduces the risk of the club slipping out of your hands, preventing those embarrassing mishits.

Choosing the Right Golf Towel

  • Material Matters– Not all golf towels are created equal. When choosing a towel, consider the material. Microfiber towels are popular because they are highly absorbent and quick-drying. They can clean your clubs effectively without leaving lint behind. Cotton towels, on the other hand, are soft and durable but may not dry as quickly. Choose a material that best suits your needs and preferences.
  • Size and Design Considerations– The size and design of your golf towel also matter. Larger towels provide more surface area for cleaning and drying, but they can be bulkier to carry around. Smaller towels are more portable but might require frequent rinsing. Additionally, consider towels with a clip or loop for easy attachment to your golf bag. Some towels come with dual surfaces, offering one side for cleaning clubs and the other for drying hands. This dual functionality can be quite handy on the course.

How to Maintain Your Golf Towel

Washing and Drying Tips

To keep your golf towel in good condition, regular washing is a must. Use a gentle detergent and avoid fabric softeners, as they can reduce the towel’s absorbency. Air drying is preferable, but if you use a dryer, choose a low heat setting to avoid damaging the fibers. Regular maintenance ensures that your towel remains effective and long-lasting.

Storage Solutions

Proper storage is also important. After a round, make sure to hang your towel out to dry before placing it back in your bag. This prevents mold and mildew buildup, keeping your towel fresh and ready for the next game. If you have multiple towels, rotate them to ensure each gets a chance to dry thoroughly between uses.

In conclusion, a golf towel might seem like a minor accessory, but it plays a significant role in your game. From keeping your clubs clean to ensuring a good grip, the right towel can enhance your performance on the course. By choosing the right material and size, and maintaining it properly, you’ll always have a reliable companion in your golf bag. So, next time you head out to the course, make sure your golf towel is ready to go. Happy golfing!

FAQs

1. How often should I wash my golf towel? It’s best to wash your golf towel after every round to keep it clean and free of debris. I know this seems a bit excessive, but I can’t tell you how many time I go to wipe off a club and the towel is muddy because of the LAST TIME I played in the rain!

2. Can I use any towel as a golf towel? While you can use any towel, specialized golf towels are designed to be more absorbent and durable for the specific needs of golfing. Kind of like with clothing, the material matters. Cotton is great, but it gets heavy when wet and takes much longer to dry than a microfiber.

3. What size should a golf towel be? The size depends on your preference. Standard golf towels are around 16×24 inches, but you might prefer a larger or smaller towel based on your needs.

4. How do I attach my golf towel to my bag? Most golf towels come with a clip or loop that allows you to attach them easily to your golf bag for convenient access. And there is usually some sort of grommet that allows you to run a hook through it.
