Keller Golf Course- Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN

As a player who’s played several courses throughout Minnesota, I can confidently say that Keller Golf Course stands as one of the Twin Cities’ most remarkable public golf destinations- and without question one of the best values around! Having spent numerous rounds exploring its beautifully crafted holes, I’m excited to share my intimate knowledge of this historic venue that has been challenging and delighting golfers since 1929.

Prime Location in the Heart of the Twin Cities

When fellow golf enthusiasts ask me about Keller Golf Course, I always emphasize its incredibly convenient location. Situated in Maplewood, just minutes from both Minneapolis and St. Paul, this municipal treasure sits at 2166 Maplewood Drive, perfectly positioned for golfers coming from any direction in the metropolitan area. I particularly love how the course is nestled in a quiet, residential area, yet remains easily accessible from Interstate 694 and Highway 61– and 61 has a place in my heart!

Getting There and Accessing the Course

One of the aspects I appreciate most about Keller Golf Course is its status as a public facility. Anyone can experience this championship-caliber layout, which has hosted numerous professional tournaments throughout its storied history. I always recommend booking tee times in advance, especially for weekend rounds, as the course’s popularity among local golfers means prime times can fill up quickly. But here is the tricky part, they only take reservations 4 days in advance. I guess that can be a good or bad thing. Now, while the weather can be a little spotty in the winter- So much so that they close… In the summer it is SPOT-on! So go in the summer- you know, there is a “golf season” in Minnesota!

A Legacy of Excellence: The Course’s Rich History

Having researched extensively about the course’s history, I can tell you that Keller Golf Course has a fascinating story. The original layout was designed by Paul Coates and opened in 1929, quickly establishing itself as one of Minnesota’s premier public facilities. What truly excites me is sharing how this course has hosted PGA and LPGA events, including the St. Paul Open, which attracted golf legends like Sam Snead and Patty Berg.

Nice video about the restoration.

The Game-Changing 2014 Renovation

I was fortunate enough to play Keller Golf Course both before and after its comprehensive 2014 renovation, and the transformation was nothing short of remarkable. The $12.2 million project, led by Richard Mandell, carefully preserved the course’s classic character while modernizing its infrastructure. The renovation included rebuilding all 18 greens, reconstructing bunkers, and improving drainage systems throughout the property.

Enhanced Practice Facilities and Amenities

When I’m giving advice to golfers planning to visit, I always highlight the impressive practice facilities that were part of the renovation. The driving range was completely redesigned, and a new short-game area was added. The clubhouse renovation particularly impresses me, as it maintained the building’s historic charm while adding modern amenities that enhance the overall deal.

Course Highlights and Playing Experience

Drawing from my numerous rounds here, I can tell you that Keller Golf Course presents a fascinating blend of challenge and playability. The layout stretches to just over 6,675 yards from the tips, but don’t let the modest length fool you. The rolling terrain, strategic bunkering, and cleverly contoured greens (they can be a bear- Nice bent-grass though) demand thoughtful shot-making and course management.

Signature Holes and Strategic Elements

The par-4 4th hole remains one of my favorite holes in the Midwest. Playing downhill with a dramatic elevation change, it epitomizes the strategic elements that make Keller Golf Course special. I always advise first-time players to pay particular attention to the green complexes, as they’re among the most interesting and challenging aspects of the course.

After a bunch rounds here, I remain impressed by how this course continues to evolve while maintaining its historic character. The successful blend of classic architecture with modern amenities makes it a must destination for any player visiting the Twin Cities area. The public accessibility, combined with championship-caliber conditions, creates an exceptional value for golfers of all skill levels.
